PRIDE AND REMEMBRANCE RUN BANNER

In 2006 the Pride and Remembrance logo was reinterpreted to express the changing dynamic of the Pride and Remembrance Association and the community it represents.

Created by Toronto media designer Richard Rhyme →, the Road Ribbon is an iconic representation of not only the history of the Pride and Remembrance Run, it is a simple graphic umbrella for the range of reasons that runners and volunteers and sponsors participate in the Run.

I wanted to abstract the historic artwork and logo ideas of the Pride and Remembrance Run", says Richard, "and create a singular image that would be associated with the Pride and Remembrance Run regardless of whether it was in black and white or color, and could stand alone without any words to tell the story.

"I realized in the early stages of the process that there already exist many ribbons for many causes, but that at the root of them all was a desire to do something good, to encourage people to participate in helping others in a way that would also help themselves. The common denominator was simply that people love to run."

"I looked to the very first Pride and Remembrance poster from 1996 which depicted a road disappearing off into a cloudy vanishing point. I then absorbed the reasons why runners do the Run - and while there were many reasons - the most prevalent responses were to support the community and in remembrance of a loved one. The new logo had to acknowledge all of that."

Richard concludes, "It all came together with the tagline. I came home from seeing the movie 'The Fountain →' and the words just seemed to be walking in front of me on the sidewalk - 'LET THE ROAD BE YOUR RIBBON'. That evening I created the first iteration of the Road Ribbon. It has grown since then to be a very adaptable logo and slogan that has received very positive review from the community."

The typeface chosen to represent the Pride And Remembrance Run in print and electronic media is called Blue Highway →, created by Canadian font designer Ray Larabie →.

Team LUV UR HAIR HOPE U WIN

Vicki Lau, Kerri Bell, Coleen Asanin, Paula Sousa and Tina Pettigrew RUN in memory of Duarte.

LUV UR HAIR HOPE U WIN

LUV UR HAIR HOPE U WIN was a favorite one-liner of Duarte Sousa, who passed away in December, 2005. He would say it to everyone, and it was apparently especially funny when Duarte taught his Portuguese Mother, who couldn't speak English, how to deliver the line with just the right emphasis and attitude.

LUV UR HAIR HOPE U WIN is a team that runs in the Pride and Remembrance Run in memory of Duarte, with Captain Paula Sousa and teammates Vicki Lau, Kerri Bell, Coleen Asanin, and Tina Pettigrew. When you see them in the run this year, be sure to shout out Duarte's favorite line to cheer them on, and help them to keep his memory alive.

Pride And Remembrance Run

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

The Pride and Remembrance Run is a 5km fundraising run/walk organized and operated by the philanthropic and athletic-oriented Pride and Remembrance Association.

The Pride and Remembrance Association (PRA) is a leading not for profit volunteer-run organization established in 1996 dedicated to supporting Toronto's lesbian and gay community. The Pride and Remembrance Run is the only annual athletic event during Toronto's Pride Week, promoting and fostering community spirit, goodwill, volunteerism and sportsmanship in the Canadian lesbian and gay community.

HISTORY OF THE RUN

In 1996 three gay triathletes founded an annual 5K fundraising run/walk coinciding with Toronto's Pride Week called the Pride and Remembrance Run.

The original Run was dedicated to partnering the themes of PRIDE and REMEMBRANCE with community celebration and personal achievement.
